Hatha Yoga
Haṭha Yoga
A traditional yoga that works with the mind through the body, centred on asana (postures) and breath. The foundation of most modern styles.
History
The term appears in medieval Indian texts and was systematised in the 15th-century Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā. In today's studios it is also a general name for slower, foundational classes.
Philosophy
Preparing body and breath as a way into deeper concentration and meditation.
Physical character
Postures are held one at a time, building flexibility, strength and balance evenly.
