Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskara)
Sūrya Namaskāra
A signature sequence of yoga, linking forward bends, back bends and plank into one flowing series.
History
Sun worship is ancient, but the current sequence was popularised in the 1920s by figures such as Bhawanrao Pant Pratinidhi, the Raja of Aundh.
Philosophy
Symbolically, an offering of gratitude to the sun as the source of life.
Physical character
Warms the whole body and moves the spine forwards and back — a full-body practice even in a few minutes.
